Describe the events that took place during the conflict between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV. What was at stake?

Henry IV wanted to have complete control over the appointment of bishops. So did Pope Gregory VII. Gregory issued a decree declaring all the king’s appointed bishops nullified and excommunicated him. Henry went to see Gregory and Gregory made him wait outside for three days. Then Henry said he would stop appointing bishops. Gregory forgave him and un-excommunicated him. Henry demoted anyone who had agreed with Gregory, then started appointing bishops again. Gregory excommunicated Henry again, but this time no one else agreed with Gregory. Henry banished Gregory and Gregory died in exile. Even though Gregory lost, he started a movement which would eventually separate the church from the state.
